About Muzigal

Muzigal is an up-and-coming startup in the ed-tech space that helps people learn music online. Growing at a rate of 20% month-on-month (MOM) in new enrolments they were able to raise funding just 6 months post launch and are now expanding globally.

Avengers, assemble!

I was working with my design manager on this project. Along with him, I had the opportunity to interact with various stakeholders from the Muzigal team including the founder, development lead and head of marketing.

My role

I was responsible for defining the project scope, discovering user pain points, prototyping, user testing solutions and the final dev handoff.

Early insights on the MVP

Traditional scheduling system

Teachers had to click on every time slot to open  timings for students. Only then can a teacher be booked for either a trial or a paid class. This system wasn’t in line with the way scheduling conversations that took place between teachers and students in real time.

Confusing Information architecture

My students, my classes, class calendar all were just different views of the same datapoints. All these sections displayed student name, the subject choosen and when is the next class. It was difficult to understand the purpose of each section.

My classes or my students?

When you look at the screenshot on the left, it is so difficult to understand what is this screen helping a teacher do? (PS: It is comes under my classes section of the left nav)

Final takeaways

Structure of the entire website needs to improve

Content needs to be targeted towards the needs of the teacher

A visual overhaul based on the new branding is needed

User Research

Understanding client needs

As the project kicked off, we did a walkthrough of the entire product to get some early insights. Post that we conducted a series of interviews with the teacher onboarding team, Muzigal’s founder, teachers on the platform, as well as the dev team managing the teacher MVP.

Understanding teacher needs

After the client alignment session, I also made sure to conduct user interviews with teachers to understand their pain points, needs and expectations from the new app. This really helped me empathise with teachers and step in to their shoes while crafting solutions.

HMWs we decided to focus on

HMW make it easier for teachers to effeciently manage and assess their students?

HMW help teachers quickly get an overview of their day?

HMW help teachers analyse their daily performance on the platform?

Week 3

They said, we heard.

Once our concepts were validated with users, I started working on the visual overhaul phase of the projects. The aim was to take a minimalist approach and help teachers focus on their tasks without distractions.

Designing possible solutions

User testing

Core experiences...

Analyse daily performance

During the user tests, a lot of teachers spoke about how it would be helpful to get reports around their performance on the platform. We zeroed in on critical data points like classes completed and profile views to help teachers gauge their activity.

Make the most of
every day

By showing the details of each class upfront we made sure that teachers spend less time managing their day and more on doing what they love.

Efficiently manage and assess students.

Smart filters enable teachers to filter out 100s of trial students they receive every month and focus only on the enrolled students. Teachers can also schedule classes on students behalf helping them improve their conversion rates.

Impact of my work

Contract extension for Parallel!

Dr. Lakshminarayana Yeluri (founder of Muzigal) was super happy with the work that I did on the teacher side, that he was more than happy to increase the contract by 2x times in terms of revenue and 1.5x times in terms of period of engagement with Parallel.

77% increase in SUS score.

After the Usability testing sessions were conducted on the prototype, it was reported that the SUS score increased by almost 77% as compared to the last test which was done on their MVP 6 months back.
(Disclaimer: Stats were shared by Muzigal’s internal testing team. I was not part of the design team while this feedback was collected from teachers)
